Bureau Structure

The FCC is divided into 7 specific Bureaus each with their own individual duties under the greater umbrella of the FCC mission. Though there is no legislation in effect to limit the number of Bureaus within the Commission, the structure has remained unchanged since 2006. Such fluid structure, however, allows for the organization to adapt and restructure to better suit developments within the wide spanning field of communication. Here’s a brief look at each Bureau.Consumer and Government Affairs The GCB reaches out to community through education, not to mention engages in a dialogue with the public by responding to concerns, complaints and queries. This Bureau works alongside state and local governments to make sure all information and new technology clearly reaches the public, including time sensitive alerts and updates such as emergency preparednessEnforcement The Enforcement Bureau makes sure all FCC rules, orders, terms and conditions are put into effect in accordance with their intentions and followed appropriately by those who they concern. This includes but is not excluded to areas of consumer protection, local competition, public safety and homeland security.International The International Bureau concerns itself with international policies in telecommunications, guarding against electromagnetic interference for US licensees, conflicts in orbital assignments for satellites, and coordinating frequency allocation. It also must make sure the FCC itself is in compliance with all international radio laws and regulations.Media Sets policy and licensing requirements for electronic media, including cable TV, broadcast TV and radio. Though the Media Bureau doesn’t handle licensing for direct broadcast satellites, it does regulate policy thereafter.Wireless Telecommunications Services Monitors and implements decisions regarding wireless communication, including but not limited to wireless internet, mobile devices, and proper use of the 700 MHz Band.Wireline Competition Bureau Paves the way for expansion of economic investment in wireline technology whether it be its infrastructure, further development or implementation. Also shapes policy regarding wireline telecommunication.Public Safety and Homeland Security Monitors for threats against the United States from a communication front, including making sure proper parameters are in place for properly authorized access and communication lines remain open amid outside interference efforts.
